The Story behind King Solomon’s Dream:

After a full day of hiking through mountainous terrain, my fellow hikers descended toward the hut, their minds set on warmth and rest. But I lingered. Years behind the lens have taught me to listen to instinct — and mine told me that there is a protea out there to use as a foreground.

I was looking for a strong foreground to anchor the landscape — something that could bring depth and balance to the scene. As I moved along the slope, I spotted a single protea, perfectly placed to stand out against the rugged backdrop.

I set up and waited. The wind was blowing, and the light was changing quickly, but I’ve come to enjoy that part of the process — watching and waiting for everything to come together. For a short while, the breeze calmed and the light softened just enough.

In a breath of stillness, the elements aligned — wind still, soft light pouring in at just the right angle — I pressed the shutter. In this single frame, the elegance of the protea stands magnificently against the grandeur of the mountains.

The difficult part is knowing that this section of the mountain was burned just a few months after I captured this image. It will take years for the vegetation to fully recover. That makes this photograph even more meaningful to me — a record of a fleeting moment, now gone.

You might wonder, why I titled it “King Solomon’s Dream”? This image reminds me of the passage in Matthew 6:28–33, where we’re encouraged to consider the lilies of the field — how they grow without worry, clothed in a beauty, King Solomon could only dream of.
